Criminal Injury (CICA) Compensation Claims

Claims for criminal injuries compensation involve an application to the CICA which is the government body which assesses and , if appropriate, compensates the victims of crime who have sustained a physical or mental injury or both. There is a right of appeal against the refusal or the amount offered by the CICA.

If you have sustained a physical or psychological injury as a result of a crime of violence, then you are entitled to seek financial compensation from the Government’s Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).

What Can I Claim For?

Injuries caused by an assault, rape, sexual abuse, psychological injuries and trauma. There are some basic rules:

The incident must be reported to the Police;

You must co-operate with the Police in any investigation and/or prosecution;

A conviction is not necessary;

Having your own criminal record will reduce or cancel any compensation due to you.

At Smooth Law we recognise that many of these issues will be difficult to deal with, let alone speak with someone else about. It is generally accepted that psychological damage requires early diagnosis and intervention. This is why Smooth Law has partnered with a Member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy who will be the stepping stone to providing this treatment.

We believe we are the only law firm in the UK to offer this service.
